Ellie,
I haven’t written in a while. Mostly life has been trucking along like normal, nothing super special happening. But things have suddenly changed.
Back in December and January, word came out of China that there was a new to humans virus that was causing a lot of people to get sick and many to pass away.
Fast forward to today and this virus has begun to ravage Italy and Spain, and has now reached the United States, including here in Dallas. Because human’s have never had this virus before, it’s especially dangerous and our governments have shut down business and travel in order to minimize the spread.
For the last two weeks, I have been working remotely (my employer’s decision), and the grocery stores have run out of toilet paper and paper towels, and hand sanitizer.
In addition, all the non-essential stores in Dallas are closed. My gym is closed, restaurants are closed. Everything that’s not a grocery store or pharmacy or doctor’s office is closed.
It’s the weirdest thing every. Even Mama Jo and Papa Tom said they’ve never seen anything like it, and they were alive during World War II.
My biggest fear is your mom works in the hospital and is likely to have significant contact with people who have this disease. That scares me for you, but kids seem to be pretty resilient against this particular illness.
The reality is this is a very scary time. People my age and older are at risk of dying from this disease and it could kill millions of people. We don’t know.
For now, I’m just going to keep working from home and staying safe.
I am healthy and not at super high risk, but I do have existing medical conditions, and there’s always a chance something could happy to me, your mom, Chris or any of your grandparents – any of us.
If I get this virus and something happens to me, I just want you to know that you are my whole heart and my whole world. Nothing in the world matters to me more than you, and I love you with everything I have. You are the best thing that’s ever happened to me in this life and I will be with you in mind and spirit forever through eternity if and when I leave this world.
I don’t really have much else to say right now. Everyone is locked down alone and bored with nothing to do. I’ll be Skyping with you shortly. I can’t wait.
I love you with all the love of an eternal lifetime, Elliebug!
Love,
Daddy
P.S. What crime does a child commit if they won’t go to bed? Resisting a rest.
